During a time when capoeira was illegal in Brazil, a capoeirista did not reveal his true identity. Instead, a person that practiced capoeira, used several names to avoid getting caught by the police.

Tradition of Capoeira Nicknames

Nicknames has become a tradition of capoeira and are still used today. Most people get their nicknames during their bautizdo, but I've met plenty of people that have gotten their before or after the event. It is a custom for a Master of Capoeira to assign a nickname to the student.
