ginga step 1

The most basic Capoeira movement, ginga.

ginga is most likely the very first move you will be taught in a capoeira class. It may look easy but most beginner's have a difficulty with getting their body lower by bending their knees.

Here are a few tips to improve your ginga technique:

Bend both knees to keep your body low. Slightly bring your shoulders up to keep your neck protected. When you step back, make sure the back foot is bent. Just how much might vary between groups. Some groups keep their back leg straight while others visibly bend it. We recommend at the very least not locking your knee because you need to be ready to quickly and smoothly shift into another movement. Don't bend your upper body forward past your front knee, this will hurt your back.
